MUSEUM VISIT –
TODAY
By the time this comes home, we will have
been to the museum. Thank you to the
wonderful whanau who help make these trips possible. I am sure the children had a fabulous time at
the Bugs exhibition – Our Backyard Heroes.
WEDNESDAY –
BUGS WITH DEAN
The Pohutukawa Syndicate teachers will be
spending the day on Wednesday visiting other schools to see other teaching
practices in action. Room 9 will have
Dean for the day and I know they will love learning more about bugs from him.
TAMARIKI TOA
We were honoured to watch the very talented
Te Pouahi Kapa Haka group perform on Thursday evening at their dress rehearsal
for Nationals and for the school on Friday.
We wish them every success for their competition in Gisborne. If you would like to see their performance

POHUTUKAWA
SYNDICATE FUNDRAISER
At the end of term we are visiting
Natureland by bus and to reduce the costs to our families we will be holding a
cake stall on Friday 17th November at lunchtime. Hopefully the notice reached home last week,
as we are hoping you are able to provide some yummy baking for this event.

Welcome to Week 1 of Term 4
I hope you had a wonderful break and had a
chance to spend some quality time together with family. I am sure the children are well rested and
ready for a busy final term. This term
we welcome a new student joining Room 9 from Qatar. We are sure Salwa and her family will settle
quickly into Nelson Central School. J
WHAT’S ON THIS TERM?
It
will go by in a flash! We are hoping to
have trips to the Suter Art Gallery and the Nelson Provincial Museum this
term. The Brook Sanctuary’s Rick Field
will be visiting us. We have the Masked
Parade at the end of next week and a Big Day Out planned for the end of term.
MASKED PARADE
The School is entering the competition,
which we generally do every other year.
For some of the students this will be the first time they have been in
the Masked Parade. Pohutukawa Syndicate
are very excited to be representing Australasia and our masks will be the NZ
native bird, the Takahe. Please keep an
eye out for the separate notice coming home soon which will give details of how
the event will run.
SPELLING
This term spelling will not be coming home
as it has done in the past. Results of the Essential List testing from the end
of last term will come home in their spelling books. You are encouraged to support your child to
learn the words they were unsure of. This term’s programme will be individualised to
the student’s writing. Please encourage
your child to write for enjoyment at home, whether it be writing their own
stories, emails or letters to family or friends, or writing out the shopping
list for you. The focus is on hearing
and recording all the sounds in the words.
LEARNING AREAS
This term we will finish our learning
around endangered NZ animals before learning about Minibeasts. In Maths we will be focussing on measurement
and for Literacy we will be looking at poetic writing as well as writing
letters.

CENTRAL CRANK MINI MTB EVENT – 17th SEPTEMBER
Excitement is
mounting as we get closer to this great, fun annual event. Register on the day for $5 and the kids can
experience a super fun mountain bike course around the school. Proceeds go straight back to the school so
get behind the School Community Group!

number of plastic bags being used, Room 1 students have taken up the initiative
of making Boomerang Bags to help make the environment more sustainable. You and your child are welcome to join their

ART GALLERY TRIP – THIS WEDNESDAY

August, we will be heading off to the Suter Art Gallery. Our session with Esther will start at 9.20 so
we will be leaving school at 9am. We
plan to return by 11am. A notice was
sent home with your child on Friday.

– ENDANGERED NZ ANIMALS
This term we are learning
about New Zealand endangered species. We
will learn about different animals found in NZ that are at risk and the
students will choose one to research themselves. There have been a few timely news
stories. If you have an opportunity to
discuss this topic with your child it can enhance the learning they will do in
class.

BEES
WAX LUNCH WRAPS
This Friday Room 9 will be
making Bees Wax Lunch Wraps. Thank you
to the parents that have offered to help the children with this. Our two sessions are at 9am to 10.30am and 11am
to 12.30pm. Thanks to this initiative by
the Enviro Agents , your child will come home with their very own fabric lunch
wrap to use. By using these we will help
to reduce the waste we have in our lunch boxes.
KORO
ADVENTURES
Our Little Blue Penguin
(Kororoa) has enjoyed some adventures with Room 9 students last week. The children are eagerly awaiting their
turn! Please support them to write their
own recount of their Koro

so quickly! For those students who had
an extended holiday, welcome back and I hope you had a wonderful winter break. J
KORO
ADVENTURES
Koro has been to two
houses already this term and I know the children are eagerly awaiting their
turn to have an adventure with him. This
is to encourage and motivate your child in writing and, whilst you are very
welcome to help and support them with this, I would love for them to do their
own diary entry of the things they get up to with Koro.
MATHS
Last week we have been
learning about transformations. At home
you can ask your child to spot different transformation patterns around the
house, such as symmetry, where the pattern reflects, translation, where it
slides and rotation, where it turns.
We are also doing our
weekly Basic Facts tests. These sheets
can be found on the Blog.
SPELLING
Each week your child will
usually be given 5 spelling words to learn “off by heart”. Please support them with this. Using the words in a sentence and making the
letters of the word with playdough or in the sand are fun ways to learn
them. Their spelling book can be used
for practice and kept at home during the week, but please remind your child to
return it on a Friday ready for the test.

We
are planning on having a few visits to the Suter Art Gallery this term. As soon as the dates are confirmed I will let
you know, as adult support is crucial to make these trips possible. We also have Hot Shots tennis sessions and a
calendar art fundraiser.
ROSE SHEPARD ART EXHIBITION
Last term Nelson Central School hosted Rose
Shepard, our artist in residence. During
her time with us some senior students were lucky enough to receive teaching from
Rose. We will be visiting G Space
Gallery at NMIT where her work, alongside some of the students’, is being displayed. If you wish to join us we will be leaving
school on Thursday afternoon at 1.30pm for a 20 minute viewing. All welcome.
KORO ADVENTURES
Starting this term your child may come home
with Koro, Room 9’s very own Little Blue Penguin! He will bring with him an adventure
diary. Your child will be asked to write
a diary entry while Koro is at your house, and hopefully experience an
‘adventure’. Please support your child
to write at least 3 interesting sentences about what they get up to.

I
hope everyone enjoyed the extra day this weekend and you all managed some
family time. I was sorry to miss a few
days last week. My husband was back in
hospital but he’s back home now and we are hoping from now on it will be smooth
sailing!
FOOTBALL SKILLS
Over
the next four weeks we have the opportunity to receive some football skills
coaching from FC Nelson. Our first
session was today and they will be every Tuesday for the next 3 weeks.
SPELLING
As
I was away spelling words will remain the same this week. The children will be tested on Friday. Remember to check out the Spelling City link
on our Blog for fun ways to learn the words.
CROSS COUNTRY
Remind
your child to wear (or bring) suitable shoes for running in. We only have four more weeks until the cross
country race so will be practising hard.
FIDGET SPINNER WEDNESDAYS
As
the weather is a little colder at the moment, Wheels Wednesday will take a
break and be replaced by a Fidget Spinner Skills Club. Your child is welcome to bring their Fidget
Spinner to school and take part in this.
GOLD KISSES FOR KA’IULANI

Thank
you to everyone who supported The Central Challenge yesterday and huge
congratulations to the School Community Group who worked so hard to make it a
wonderful success. Our focus this term
is on the key competency of “participating and contributing” and I know the
children learn so much when this can be put into practice in such a worthwhile
way.
The
term is not going to slow down with plenty of different events happening.
CROSS COUNTRY
Next
week Pohutukawa Syndicate will commence training for the school’s cross country
race, which will be taking place in week 9 of this term. We will be talking about and setting personal
goals and how we can achieve these. We
will be looking for everyone to have a ‘can-do’ attitude and give 100%
effort. Suitable footwear for running is
a must!
TOTARA SAUSAGE SIZZLE – THIS TUESDAY
If
you have supported this fundraiser, remember you’ll get your sausage or meal
deal on Tuesday lunchtime.
GOLD KISSES FOR KA’IULANI – THIS WEDNESDAY

May. We really need your support. Items for the White Elephant Stall can be
dropped off outside the Library on Mondays and Fridays before school. Helpers are needed on the day, so please let

orienteering race.
CENTRAL
CHALLENGE – MRS HARRISON’S BOTTLES
We need
each child to donate in a bottle or jar for this iconic school stall that will
be having its final appearance at this year’s event. It can be something healthy from the supermarket,
or you may get creative and fill a jar with small toys, for example. Each bottle will be given a
number and, on the day, you buy a ticket for $2 and get a surprise!!
GOLD KISSES FOR
KA’IULANI – WEDNESDAY, 31st MAY
On the 31st May we are asking
children to bring in a gold coin and dress in yellow to support a great cause,
raising money to help the little girl of a former NCS teacher. You might be in to win a prize for the best
dressed or for guessing how many balloons are in Matua Huhu’s car.
HOCKEY SKILLS
We have our second and final session of
hockey on Tuesday morning. Please make
sure your child wears appropriate footwear.
TREEMENDOUS
GARDEN MAKEOVER GRAND OPENING – 17th JUNE

WORKING
BEE – THIS SATURDAY, 6TH MAY
Thank you to the five families who have
signed up to help this Saturday at the Sensory Garden’s working bee. If you can spare some time we will be
starting at 8.30am and will be finished by 2.30pm. I am looking forward to seeing as many of you
there as possible.
CLASS
REWARD
The
children worked really hard as a team last term and are very close to filling
up their 100s chart. When they reach 100
scales, the class will vote on a treat, such as a movie afternoon, dress-up
day, or disco. I will let you know what
they decide and when it will happen.
SEESAW AND SUMDOG
Some children should have brought home a
Sumdog login at the end of last term.
Unfortunately, I still have some here which I will ensure go home with
your children early this week. You
should have also received a letter inviting you to sign up for Seesaw. Please let me know if you need help to do
this.
ANZAC
During the holidays we remembered the
soldiers who have fought in wars gone by.
This week we will be learning a bit more about ANZAC and if you have any
family stories you can share with your children it would be great to hear them
being told in class. On Friday we will
make ANZAC biscuits. Please let me know
if your child is not able to join in with this activity.

This is the first Saturday back after the

READING / SPELLING
This
week the children will be doing plays for reading so may not bring home a
different book each day. They also have
spelling words and we will have the test on Thursday. Please support them with their practise at

Towards
the end of this week look out for a letter and email regarding a new way for

the year.
SUMDOG
This
website offers fun, engaging games that adapt according to your child’s
needs. This week we are going through
some assessments on line. Your child

writing at the moment we are learning about adjectives, words that describe
nouns. When you are talking to your
child, ask them to think of an adjective to describe something. See if you can come up with something really
interesting.

reached through the Blog. This is a fun,
effective way for your child to learn the words. Please support them to learn the words in
preparation for the Spelling Test on Fridays.

Welcome to Week 8 of Term 1
I am so pleased to be back after a scary
week. My husband suffered a heart attack
last Thursday evening, out of the blue.
Thankfully he is on the mend now after spending the majority of last
week in Wellington hospital. I am very
lucky that Nelson Central has such quality relievers and Sam and Caroline
stepped in to take over. They had
nothing but praise for your children when they were in Room 9.
SPELLING
I don’t believe the children have been
tested on the words I set for them in Week 6 so I plan to test them on these at
the end of the week. You can find these
words written in their spelling notebooks or on the Spelling City website,
linked via the Blog.
SWIMMING
Last week was the final week for swimming
at NCS. The pool is now closed – not the
best summer for weather!

the weather turning a little more Autumnal last week I think swimming in the
pool may only have a few weeks left if we are lucky. It is part of our physical education programme,
so please send your child to school with their togs every Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday. If there is a medical
reason why they cannot swim it would be great if you could write a note in the
Communication book or see me in the morning and let me know they are not to

Thank
you to everyone who made the Meet the Teacher afternoon tea last Wednesday. It was a great turn out and hopefully you
found it worthwhile and now know a little bit about the day to day running of
the classroom.
SUMMER PICNIC - TUESDAY
Please
come along with your picnic rug and dinner to enjoy a social event with other
families. There will be Kelly Sports
entertainment and it starts at 5.30pm.

HOMEWORK
Reading
books will come home from this week.
There will also be spelling words for most of the children. Further testing is needed on some of
them. Please see me if you find the
homework arduous. It is meant to take
just 10-15 minutes each day and will greatly help your child as they develop
their literacy and numeracy skills.
Please record what your child does below on a daily basis.

Welcome to Week 2 of Term 1
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful Room 9 families
for being so organised last week, remembering stationery and swimming togs to
make the first week go so smoothly. It
has been great to meet the children and families and I look forward to getting
to know you all better over the coming weeks.
MEET THE TEACHER
The
Pohutukawa Syndicate welcomes all parents and caregivers to meet on the deck at
the back of Rooms 11 and 12s this Wednesday straight after school. Bring along some afternoon tea, meet the team
and find out about our Syndicate, as well as come into Room 9 for your child to
show you around. You can also find out
more about me and the classroom routines and expectations.
HOMEWORK
Last
week some forms came home that asked for crucial information regarding your
contact details and also information around your child and things that may
impact on their school life. Thank you
to those families who have returned these.
If you have yet to do this please could I have these back as soon as
possible.
BLOG
Please
check out our Blog for the latest happenings in Room 9. This will be updated regularly (usually
weekly) and is a good place for the children to play educational games, find
their spelling words and basic facts sheets, as well as copies of our
newsletters and notices.
READING
This
week I will be continuing to test the children for reading groups and
spelling. Your child may come home with
an easy book to read from the class. Our
reading programme will start properly in the next week or two.
WRITING
Each
week your child will be asked to write about a personal experience they have
had. To assist them with it is helpful
for you to discuss what they might write about before the start of the week.
MATHS
Over
the next few weeks your child will be tested on their number knowledge and
strategies. In class we will be looking
at Statistics and exploring language associated with this topic.
LIBRARY / SWIMMING
Library
day is Friday for Room 9. Please help
your child to remember their Library book by Friday each week.
Swimming
is Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Swimming is part of our Curriculum.
Should your child be unable to swim please provide a note / email me
with the reason they cannot participate.
